AMD Provides Sixth-Generation Performance with EMbedded AMD-K6庐E Microprocessor

--Powerful CPU, dedicated support gives embedded engineers high-powered, cost-effective x86 engine for demanding applications --

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- November 3, 1998 --AMD today announced the AMD-K6庐E microprocessor for the embedded microprocessor market. The AMD-K6E processor offers developers the highest performance of any Socket 7 embedded microprocessor using the x86 instruction set and allows existing x86 designs, software, development tools, debuggers and compilers to be used in high-performance products.

As a member of AMD's E86TM family of x86-based processors, the AMD-K6E also gives systems developers access to the largest base of programmers and existing software while enabling powerful, cost-effective solutions for today's increasingly sophisticated embedded applications. AMD is providing sales and engineering support to embedded system engineers, offering design assistance, developer support and technical documentation.

"The AMD-K6 microprocessor has redefined the desktop PC market, providing sixth-generation performance at an affordable price. Now, embedded applications can benefit from the reliable, affordable computing power derived from this powerful microprocessor," said Bob McConnell, vice president and general manager of AMD's Embedded Processor Division. "The AMD-K6E microprocessor gives our embedded customers a significant performance boost which enables them to produce superior products.

"For applications such as central office switches, point-of-sale terminals, information appliances and Windows® based single board computers, the AMD-K6E microprocessor is an excellent choice for OEMs looking to take advantage of the x86 instruction set," added McConnell. "They can continue to use the industry's most prevalent architecture to produce products with high performance and fast time-to-market."

The AMD-K6E processor, designed to run both 16-bit and 32-bit software, delivers high-performance x86 instruction set processing and supports x86 operating systems including the WindowsCE, Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating systems and applications that run on them. The processor contains the industry standard MMXTM instruction set and fits the low-cost, high-volume Socket 7 infrastructure.

The AMD-K6E processor is an embedded version of the sixth-generation, Microsoft® Windows compatible AMD-K6 processor. The 8.8-million-transisitor AMD-K6E processor is manufactured on AMD's 0.25-micron, five-layer-metal process technology at AMD's state-of-the-art Fab 25 wafer fabrication facility in Austin, Texas.

AMD's Leadership in x86 Embedded Products
"Embedded systems engineers have unique needs, and AMD is now ready to serve these customers with the dedicated engineering support needed to bring their designs to market," said Rex Meek, director of marketing and systems engineering of AMD's Embedded Processor Division. "The performance, reliability and price of the AMD-K6E microprocessor make it a compelling part for embedded systems. Our experience in the embedded market has shown that superior customer support and a fast time-to-market are as critical to the success of the total product as the part itself.

"Our customers have made significant investments in their x86 embedded products, and the AMD-K6E microprocessor allows a path to greater performance while preserving much of their existing software," continued Meek. "The x86 instruction set is mature, robust and has a wide range of tools and programmers to help bring products to market more quickly. AMD's E86 family of embedded x86 processors now offers the widest range of performance using a single instruction set -- from our Am186™ microcontrollers to the AMD-K6E microprocessor. These parts demonstrate AMD's commitment to supporting our embedded customers with a continuum of products compatible with the largest base of installed software in the world."

Developer Support
The E86 family offers complete solutions including support from the FusionE86SM program with a full complement of third-party development tools and protocol stacks. AMD works closely with leading Socket 7 chipset manufacturers to leverage the tremendous investment and experience in PC chipset and motherboard design. This provides for the continuing availability of current and future Socket 7 compatible solutions with long-term support for embedded applications.

Pricing and Availability
The AMD-K6E processor is available in a Socket 7-compatible, 321-pin ceramic PGA package. The AMD-K6E processor is available in 266-MHz and 233-MHz clock speeds. Pricing starts at $84 for the 266-MHz AMD-K6E and at $81 for the 233-MHz AMD-K6E in 1000-unit quantities through AMD's distributors.
