IEC Presents Fellow Award To AMD President And CEO DR. Hector Ruiz



CHICAGO -- October 29, 2002 --The International Engineering Consortium recently presented the IEC Fellow Award to Dr. Hector Ruiz, president and CEO of AMD (NYSE: AMD) , in a ceremony at the IECIt's annual Executive ComForum gathering, held this year in Boca Raton, Fla.

The IEC Fellow Award was established in 1994 to recognize individuals who have provided the information industry with a superior level of sustained and significant service. Areas of service considered for the award include education, technology, and industry leadership.

Hector de J. Ruiz joined AMD in January 2000 as President and Chief Operating Officer, and was named CEO in April 2002. He also serves on AMDIt's Board of Directors.

Prior to joining AMD, Dr. Ruiz spent 22 years at Motorola. He held a variety of executive positions abroad and in the U.S while at Motorola, eventually becoming president of the companyIt's semiconductor product sector. Dr. Ruiz has also worked in both the research and manufacturing divisions of Texas Instruments in Dallas.

Dr. Ruiz has shown strong leadership in expanding the impact of education around the world. In 1999, he was appointed to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board by then-Governor George W. Bush. Ruiz currently serves on the Foundation Advisory Council for the University of Texas' College of Engineering. He has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. In 2000, Dr. Ruiz was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference.

Born in Piedras Negras, Mexico, Dr. Ruiz earned his B.S. and M.S. from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctorate in electronics from Rice University. In Texas, he now serves on the GovernorIt's Task Force for Economic Growth and the GovernorIt's Business Council.

In receiving the IEC Fellow Award, Dr. Ruiz joins some 80 communications trailblazers, including Gordon Moore, former CEO of Intel; David Packard, founder of Hewlett-Packard; Robert Galvin, former Motorola CEO; Vinton Cerf, senior vice president of MCI; Jack S. Kilby, Nobel Laureate and a pioneer in the development of the integrated circuit; and John Chambers, President and CEO of Cisco Systems.
