AMD Case Study: Corprasoft, Inc.

"Our decision to go with the AMD Athlon processor-based systems has been the right decision. We had no doubts that these systems would run our code flawlessly, and be 100% compatible. We've had no issues whatsoever. And we've evolved from a system where our developers were waiting for things to happen to a system where our developers are almost never waiting."

Company Profile
Corprasoft, Inc. (www.corprasoft.com), an independent software vendor based in Dallas, Texas, sells web-based, case management systems designed for corporate legal departments. More than 250 corporations, universities, government agencies and nonprofits use their software - Corprasoft Legal Desktop - and the package of service, support, hardware and training that go with it.

Challenge
Corprasoft Legal Desktop is a Web-based product designed to maintain high- performance regardless of the number of users who access the system. To achieve this scalability, the product uses a 3-tier architecture based on Microsoft’s Internet Information Server, COM+ components, and a Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle database. Unlike traditional client/server products, all of the application’s components are installed on one or more centralized servers.

This new server-centric architecture presented a challenge to Corprasoft’s development team. In order to effectively develop and debug code, each developer had to maintain all of the major server-based components on their workstation. This placed extreme demands on the workstation hardware, both in memory size and performance and CPU throughput. "We needed an extremely fast box we could run as a developer workstation," said Phil Russell, vice president of product development. "It's critical to us that our developers not sit around waiting for things to happen."

A second, similar challenge was the need to deploy the software on a number of sales demo servers. Because of the need to quickly deploy and reconfigure these servers, Corprasoft again decided to place all three server tiers on a single computer. In order to present its product in the best light, these servers had to be extremely fast and able execute all three application tiers on a single Windows? 2000 installation.

Solution
For the engineering workstation application, Corprasoft had several computers based on an older design by an AMD competitor. Because these systems used a standard ATX case, Corprasoft replaced the motherboard and memory on these units, while recycling other major components. Corprasoft sought a relatively mature motherboard that supported large amounts of fast DDR memory. The motherboard that best met the company’s demanding criteria was based on an AMD Athlon™ processor.

“We had been watching AMD for quite a while, and welcomed the opportunity to build some AMD Athlon™ processor-based systems,” said Russell. “Based on the AMD Athlon processor’s track record and industry acceptance, we had no reservations whatsoever about compatibility, and were hearing great things about performance. The results are astounding. The AMD Athlon processor-based systems have blazing performance.”

“In a development shop, you sometimes lose sight of the little 5- and 10- second waiting periods where a developer is basically twiddling his thumbs," said Russell. After putting in the AMD processor-based systems, we realized just how much time we were probably wasting every day. Now there is a whole new rhythm and flow in the group.”

For the sales demo server application, Corprasoft’s sales team wanted an extra performance edge that would make the software “pop”. Impressed with what had been achieved in the development group, Corprasoft acquired systems with AMD Athlon processor-based platforms. Again, the results were impressive. “In sales presentations there are subconscious differences, probably measured in milliseconds, that make a big difference in the customer’s overall perception of the product. The cool thing is that with the AMD Athlon processor/DDR memory combination, we’re achieving better results with our servers compared to those of a competitor that were in use in our labs,” Russell said.
