Q:What is the AMD-760™ MPX chipset?
A:The AMD-760 MPX chipset is AMDIt's next-generation chipset for the AMD Athlon™ MP processor. It consists of two chips: the AMD-762™ system bus controller, or Northbridge, and the AMD-768™ peripheral bus controller, or Southbridge. The AMD-760 MPX offers an enhanced 66MHz/64- & 32-bit PCI Bus, which provides an improved high-speed peripheral connection and AC-97 audio support. The AMD-760 MPX chipset unleashes the power of Double Date Rate (DDR) memory technology, enabling the ultimate x86 performance in multi-tasking and multimedia-intensive applications. The AMD-760 MPX chipset supports up to two AMD Athlon MP processors with 266MHz front side buses, as well as AGP-4x graphics.

Q:How does the AMD-760 MPX chipset differ from the AMD-760™ MP chipset?
A:The AMD-760 MPX chipset features an enhanced 66MHz/64- & 32-bit PCI Bus and a feature-rich Southbridge that offers PCI-to-PCI bridging capability. Together these components provide an improved high-speed peripheral connection. The AMD-760 MPX chipset improves upon the previous AMD-760™ MP chipset, which offers a 33MHz/64- & 32-bit PCI Bus, providing a more powerful solution for workstation and server applications.

Q:Is the AMD-760 MP chipset still available?
A:Yes. The AMD-760 MP chipset is planned to be available through 2002.

Q:What are the features and benefits of the AMD-762™ Northbridge?
A:The AMD-762™ system bus controller features support for up to two AMD Athlon MP processors using Smart MP technology, up to 4 Gigabytes of DDR memory, and AGP-4x graphics card support. All of these combine to enable the ultimate computing experience for multi-tasking and multi-threaded environments. It also features a 266MHz bus for the AMD Athlon MP processor, providing improved scalability for workstation and server applications.

Q:What are the features and benefits of the AMD-768™ Southbridge? What speed hard drives does it support?
A:The AMD-768™ peripheral bus controller complements the AMD-762 system controller by offering a robust I/O subsystem along with sophisticated system management capability. The AMD-768 southbridge supports two-channel ATA 100/66/33 hard drives, and offers extended performance with its PCI-to-PCI bridging capability and 66MHz/64-bit PCI Bus.

Q:What operating systems are supported?
A:AMD tests its processors and platforms for backward compatibility with a wide range of software and hardware peripherals including operating systems such as Microsoft® Windows® and Linux.

Q:Are third-party chipsets in development supporting the AMD Athlon MP processors?
A:In general, AMD sets the quality standard by bringing out the first set of innovation solutions to the market place and encourages third-party vendors to continue to provide high-performance chipsets with advanced features for current and future product lines. AMD continues to enable compelling and complete solutions for the server and workstation markets with AMD-760 MP and AMD-760 MPX chipsets. We plan to continue our strategy to provide solutions that meet our customers’needs.

Q:Are other motherboards using third-party chipsets in development?
A:With the launch of our new AMD-760 MPX chipset, we have expanded our motherboard vendor partnerships to 5 leading providers currently—Abit, Asus, Gigabyte, MIS and Tyan—with more expected. These new partnerships are expected to allow us to provide an increased supply of dual processor solutions to the marketplace and meet the growing demands of our server and workstation market. The AMD-760 MPX chipset is designed to industry standards, where compatibility is paramount.

Q:What is Smart MP technology?
A:Smart MP technology features dual point-to-point, high-speed system buses, an optimized "MOESI" cache coherency protocol, which manages data and memory traffic, as well as innovative "snoop"buses, which offer high-speed communication between the CPUs in a multiprocessing system. Smart MP technology is designed to optimize the execution of multi-threaded, mission-critical applications empowering your server and workstation platforms to achieve new levels of productivity.

Q:Is Socket A supported?
A:Yes. AMD's stable Socket A platform is planned to be supported through 2002 and beyond.
