Q:What markets are you targeting with the 800 Series of the AMD Opteron processor?
A:The AMD Opteron processor 800 Series is for use in up to eight-way servers. Enterprise workloads typically benefiting from four-way and eight-way server processing power include large, mission critical databases, business processing (ERP, CRM, SCM), business intelligence, as well as other IT infrastructure applications including heavy-duty Web serving and messaging.

Q:What models of the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series are available now?
A:The AMD Opteron processor 800 Series is currently available in models 848, 846, 844, 842 and 840. The AMD Opteron processor, Model 850, announced on May 18, 2004 will be available within 30 days of the launch date.

Q:What processor(s) does the 800 Series of the AMD Opteron processor compete against?
A:The AMD Opteron processor Model 850 competes primarily against the Xeon MP in four-to eight-way servers. Many customers find that the price/performance advantage and 64-bit capability offered by the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series make it a very compelling product compared to the competition.

Q:What motherboard support is available for these processors?
A:The AMD Opteron processor 800 Series is supported by the Celestica A8440 server, which is available through the Validated Server Program, the Newisys 4300 server, and the Tyan S2880 motherboard.

Q:What OEMs or system builders are offering systems featuring the 800 Series of the AMD Opteron processor?
A:HP launched the DL585 (4U/4P) Server based on the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series in April which is shipping today. Many system builders and value-added resellers are taking advantage of the opportunity to work with Celestica, other ODMs and distribution partners to offer servers based on the AMD Opteron processor.

Q:What is the memory capability of the 800 Series of the AMD Opteron processor?
A:In addition to providing world-class 32-bit performance, the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series is 64-bit capable, allowing it to support very large memory, well beyond the 4GB limit of competing processors. In server environments based on 4P and 8P systems, this large memory addressability can benefit enterprise workloads such as mission-critical databases, business processing (ERP, CRM, SCM) and business intelligence. This can result in enhanced performance and improved productivity in business environments. With its 128-bit integrated memory controller and three HyperTransport™ technology links offering up to 19.2GB/s of I/O bandwidth, the AMD Opteron processor provides higher level of performance for multi-threaded applications by reducing memory latency—the CPU gets information more quickly and in turn produces results more quickly.

The AMD Opteron processor is based on AMD64 with Direct Connect Architecture, which helps eliminate the bottlenecks inherent in a front-side bus and, instead, directly connects the processors, the memory controller and the I/O to the central processor unit, improving overall system performance and efficiency.

Q:What chipset support is available for these processors?
A:The AMD Opteron processor 800 Series is supported by the AMD-8000™ series of chipsets, including the AMD-8131™ HyperTransport PCI-X Tunnel and the AMD-8111™ HyperTransport I/O Hub.

Q:What software supports these processors?
A:As a fully backward-compatible x86 microprocessor, the AMD Opteron processor is designed to support all existing 32-bit server and workstation operating systems from Microsoft? (Windows? Server 2003, Windows XP, etc.), major Linux distributors (RedHat, SuSE, TurboLinux, SCO, MandrakeSoft), and Sun Microsystems Solaris. In addition, several 64-bit operating systems exist in production versions (RedHat Advanced Server 3.0, TurboLinux 8, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8, UnitedLinux V1, MandrakeLinux Corporate Version 2.1 and NetBSD) and several, including the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003, are in development. For more information on software support for AMD Opteron, see www.amd.com/amd64ecosystem.

Q:What benchmarks are you providing for these processors?
A:AMD Opteron processors are supported by industry standard benchmarks appropriate for the target market(s) of each processor. For the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series, AMD has already published benchmark results for TPC-C, MMB3, SPECint_rate2000, SPECfp?_rate2000, SPECjbb2000, SPECweb99 SPECweb99_ssl, And SAP (R) Standard Application Sales and Distribution (SD).

For more information, please see: www.amd.com/opteronperformance or the specific organization Web site.

Q:Is the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series available through the Validated Server Program?
A:Yes, the Validated Server Program offers systems based on the AMD Opteron processor 800 Series. See www.amd.com/vsp7 for more information.
